I have not found South African food to be overly exciting. Local cuisine has become diluted by American food, namely fast food (like Nando's which originated in SA but is now popular in Baltimore). Here’s some new things I’ve tried.
Rusks; like biscotti, 9/10 especially when dipped in ice cream |
The local braai spot |
Braai on 4th of July |
Typical SA braai with pap (fluffy cooked meal that looks like mashed potatoes 8/10); homemade by the nurses for us |
Bunny chow; a Durban specialty of curry in a hollowed out loaf of Wonderbread 5/10 |
Malva pudding (bread pudding underneath custard) and Frangelico Dom Pedro (amarulo and cream) 7/10 |
Samp (like barley) with beef stew, homemade by our neighbor 8/10 |
Vetkoek; the staple of SA street food, fried dough balls 5/10 |
Fashion sandwiches (in Cape Town) AKA sushi sandwiches |
Dinky Donuts by the beach in Durban 10/10 |
Not pictured: biltong, South African beef jerky
